Corrected and pretty cool! Frognet started in 1996 as a dial-up ISP company. The availability of open source telephony software is only one part of the business operation equation. Other real costs to manage an ISP business include price of equipment acquisition, human capital, training, data conversion and integration. More importantly, finding and hiring motivated CS talent must be factored into this equation.

In a frank conversation with Chip Swanson, CEO, and David Broeckelman-Post from Frognet, and IPiFony’s Matthew Hardeman, the three discuss the other costs for internet service providers. Digium’s Asterisk open source software helps new internet service providers bring soft switch applications including VOIP and other telephony services to the marketplace. We at DIDXchange met the Adlers at CTIA Wireless in 2008 and have stayed in touch via Facebook, Twitter and more conferences. Ilene and I discuss our professional history and when we began working in and with technology. Allyson Kapin’s article “Giving Tech a Bad Name” gave us much to explore in the areas of how men and women compare in technology.

Why is there a predominance of men in technology? Is it how weare taught as children for correct behavior among our gender? Being well-behaved isn’t always the way to make things happen. Are we identifying with the victim level as women in our response to to these questions and to what we perceive as male chauvinism or mistreatment of women?

As women or men, we have to make it happen, take action, make waves, collaborate, pitch the best people to the world whether they are men or women.

At Vantage Communications, employees deal with technology day to day. About 98% of the women who join them do not have experience in technology, but the ones who persevere become part of an exciting, innovative company.

(please help me find the first lady’s name) organized the Asterisk Pavilion at the CommunicAsia in Singapore 2009 with 12 exhibitors and 13 sponsors such as Digium, Sangoma, intuit system integrators, OpenVox, Aruba, JCMex (certified Digium partner with over 180 distribution points across Asia), Adheva, Redfone, snom, Polycom, DQM Corporation, Xorcom, WFR and more. Last year 2008, AsterConference was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Plans for 2010 include more recognition for Asterisk Pavilion. CommunicAsia does not have a VoIP Pavilion; therefore, the Asterisk Pavilion is a great way to get attention in one location from interested parties for telecommunications and unified communications. It’s an example of something I preach ongoing: “Collaborate with your competitor.”
