Telecom operators, Etisalat Nigeria, over the weekend,   donated a complete primary school structure comprising 11 classrooms, eight modern toilets and a borehole with water treatment, to the Lagos state government as part of the telecommunication’s company support for educational development in the country.

While commissioning the Edward Blyden Memorial Primary School project located on the Lagos Island, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan expressed government’s appreciation and of the people of the state, to Etisalat for its support to the educational sector which remains the foundation for growth in other sectors of the economy.

According to her, Etisalat has contributed immensely to the development of education in Lagos state.

“We appreciate Etisalat’s great support and commitment in the educational sector and selfless service to our country. In addition to the project, we are commissioning today, I am aware of their support for other schools in the state as well as their scholarship programme for university students across the country. It is my wish that we have more corporate organizations emulating Etisalat in this worthy cause to enhance the quality of our youths who are the leaders of tomorrow,” the Deputy Governor said.

The Etisalat Nigeria CEO, Steven Evans, said the telecommunications company believes corporate social responsibility (CSR) was important. “We strongly believe in the provision of support for the community we depend on for our business success; and in adding value to the societies in which we work being a good corporate socially responsible organisation contributing to the socio-economic well-being of the people.”

The school which is one of the oldest in the state, was founded in 1938 by Mr J. Albert.

Edward Blyden Memorial Primary School is one of the three schools adopted by Etisalat Nigeria in partnership with the Lagos state government under its Adopt-a-School programme. The other are Rabiatu Thompson Primary School, Surulere and Akande Dahunsi Secondary School, Victoria Island. The old structure of the school was demolished and reconstructed by Etisalat within a 9-month period; having commenced the project in February 2010.
