Munich, February 19, 2013 – In the future, cars will increasingly be equipped with emergency call functions or infotainment applications – and these systems rely on the vehicle being connected to the mobile network. Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), together with two German automakers and four international network operators, will be demonstrating at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) how network-operator-specific information (subscriber data) can be installed in a tailored, secure way via the mobile network at the time of vehicle delivery and later amended. With “Securing Mobile Life” as its motto, G&D will also be presenting other solutions that make life in the digital world more secure. Taking the example of mobile payment, G&D will be presenting its multi-application NFC SIM card, its interoperable mobile wallet and its TSM service, which enables secure installation of payment applications on cellphones. Further highlights include managed services for the secure roll-out of sensitive smartphone apps and a concept for how to use open cloud-based storage services such as Dropbox in a secure way.

Visitors to the Mobile World Congress (February 25-28, 2013) who come to the G&D booth (hall 6, booth D70) will find a total of eight presentation areas. These will give them a comprehensive overview of the portfolio of products and solutions offered by one of the leading mobile security specialists. G&D is focusing in particular on the following topics:

In the area of Subscription Management/M2M, G&D will be demonstrating the secure remote personalization and activation of embedded SIMs using the company’s own SmartTrust® AirOn™ subscription management platform. G&D will also be presenting a series of possible applications for mobile network operators. One example, which G&D will illustrate by way of a feasibility study, shows how a local network operator subscription can be securely loaded onto an embedded SIM in a car’s telematics module, personalized, then removed again to be replaced by another.

Secure lifecycle management of NFC applications: In the area of NFC and TSM services, G&D will be showing how service providers can use TSM (Trusted Service Manager) solutions to achieve the highest level of security in transmitting and personalizing NFC applications via the mobile network (over the air, OTA). G&D will also be demonstrating all aspects of NFC payment, from the multi-application NFC SIM card and the SmartTrust® Portigo™ digital wallet to the secure installation of payment applications on cellphones. The digital wallet received the CARTES 2012 payments trade show’s SESAMES Award in the e-transactions category.

Management of secure apps: G&D will be presenting a solution for enhanced smartphone app security that helps service providers to develop and launch secure applications designed to run in what is known as a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). As Trusted Service Manager (TSM), G&D transmits the security-relevant components of security-sensitive smartphone apps in multiple-encrypted form via the mobile network to a protected area of the mobile device’s processor, installs the application, and takes on responsibility for managing the entire lifecycle.

Secure cloud storage: G&D will also be presenting a concept for how to combine the flexibility of open storage platforms already on the market, such as Dropbox, with companies’ extremely high security requirements. G&D has opted for hardware-based encryption and developed a smartphone and tablet app that overlays existing storage services. To encode the data, the app uses a key that is stored in a secure element such as a SIM card on the mobile device. This ensures all data are encrypted on the device, before they are transferred to the cloud, so that neither the cloud provider nor other unauthorized parties can read the protected data.

If you would like to find out more about these topics, or would like an opportunity for background discussions on NFC, LTE, M2M, or any other topic at the MWC, please get in touch with Stefan Waldenmaier by e-mail at moc.ed-ig@reiamnedlaw.nafets .

The CTIA Wireless Trade Association is planning to unveil a ratings system for mobile applications next week, allowing users to properly identify what apps are suitable for specific age groups.

Until now, mobile stores had initiated a self-monitoring system for games or apps that contain graphic content.

For example, the popular iPhone game “Infinity Blade” in the iOS App Store is “Rated 9+ for frequent/intense cartoon or fantasy violence and infrequent/mild realistic violence.

Having stores responsible for rating apps is not a reliable method for several reasons.

The main goal of the stores and developers is to sell as many copies of the app as possible, creating a conflict of interest when describing any inappropriate content.

A store selling an app that may have graphic content may choose not to put in any rating material at all so it can increase the number of potential customers.

Most apps in the Android Market, which is not as heavily regulated as the App Store, do not contain any information on ratings.

On the other hand, major publishers in console gaming submit their games to ESRB because retailers like Wal Mart and GameStop will not sell the games if they’re not rated.

Gaming on smartphones has reached high levels over the past year, leading to iOS and Android displacing Nintendo as the market share leader in mobile software revenue.

Mobile store operators like Apple, Google and Microsoft are keeping quiet about their reactions to the new ratings system.

These tech titans may sell the games without a rating.

But they will likely submit apps to the ratings process to alleviate their own liability if a system is outlined.

Industry-wide ratings may have an effect on how apps may be organized, sold and bought in their marketplaces.

But so far the consequences of a ratings system remain to be seen.

The hope is that the new system will lead to better educated consumers and a more defined idea of what’s fair and what is foul in the mobile space.

Analysts argue that such a high volume of content is reaching millions of smartphone users without any validated warning of the content of the apps.

A practice many consider socially irresponsible and dangerous.

Especially as young children become drawn to mobile devices for entertainment purposes.

Brian Divelbiss shares how aisle411, Inc. makes grocery shopping a blissful experience. Listen up, Publix, Carrefour, SuperValu, Safeway, Winn Dixie and Kroger.

The mobile application enables consumers to search, find and map everything they are looking for while shopping right down to the section of the aisle within a grocery store.

One of people’s pet peeves is searching for long periods of time for something when you’re in a hurry in a hardware, grocery or other type of store … and sometimes the “help” is not ready to help.

Aisle411 has created a user experience utilizing * geo-fencing where the consumer actually has the ability to be recognized the minute you park in the grocery store parking lot. Using GPS, Aisle411 knows the consumer is in the particular store. In fact, as opposed to having ten different apps for ten different stores, one app will take you inside of any of the ‘stores on board’ experience.

A sophisticated voice recognition technology lets the shopper speak to the app and say what you are looking for. One can build shopping lists.

Even map one’s entire shopping list ahead of time for the most convenient path possible (in a world where time is more valuable than ever.) While following your map, stop anywhere to scan barcodes for reviews by other consumers, too. Check to see if there are any offers and virtual coupons one can use.

For example, it may even provide consumers with suggestions. Imagine buying vanilla ice cream and the app lets one know also where the chocolate syrup and cherries are.

Does Aisle411 have a special agreement with consumers and retailers?

It is free to the retailer and to the consumer to use. Retailers are invited to get together with Aisle411. In fact, Aisle411 has been bombarded with retailers asking, how do they participate?

Aisle411 uses publicly available data about the products in a stores and where they are, and then they crowd-source for the remainder of information needed. In fact, consumers are rewarded for informing Aisle411 where items are at.

Some of the retailers currently tapping into Aisle411 are ShopNSav which is a part of the European chain SuperValu. Also Schnucks which has 90 supermarkets in St. Louis and the Midwestern United States.

“We are working with 1500 stores already and are adding an average of 150 more week,” says Brian Divelbiss.

* What is geo fencing? A Geo-fence is a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. A geo-fence could be dynamically generated – as in a radius around a store or point location. Or a geo-fence can be a predefined set of boundaries, like school attendance zones or neighborhood boundaries.

<img src="http://www.ispeech.org/images/listen.gif" alt="Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org" title="Listen to this Post.
Please accept our apologies for forgetting to bring the camera stand to this recorded video interview. We are not floating on a boat under the moon in the ocean. It’s our Editor-in-Chief and her unsteady hands giving you and Sam Abadir this feeling.

But … Sam Abadir is quite interesting. He is the Chairman and CTO at appMobi. He was the Chairman and CTO at FlyCast, Inc. which was the first company to deliver streamed entertainment to the iPhone and continues to lead the way as a top ten application on multiple smartphone platforms. They had to change the name of the service which was called FlyTunes because Apple didn’t like it.

DIDX and appMobi were exhibitors at CTIA Wireless. As media partner, our DIDX podcast and Techistan magazine team were searching for cool people, companies, services, applications and ideas at the show. appMobi was definitely one to note!

Appmobi began as something called FlyTunes. Sam Abadir says, “Actually we got a love letter from Apple stating they did not like FlyTunes … it was a web app that was like an XM SIRIUS Satellite app that we white labeled. It was later called FlyCast. We took it from the IOS to Android to Blackberry.”

The company decided to take this whole thing beyond the broadcast world, so that whatever they developed internally they rebranded it for the world.

“Users become business owners in this day and age because of mobile tools like appMobi and online tools such as direct inward dialing so easy to leverage,” Suzanne Bowen mentions in the conversation.

The company is entering into the “mobile payments” industry … push messaging (fancy name for direct marketing). Push messaging pushes an ad into an app in an automated way.

Analytics is another area that appMobi specializes in. They make it easy for developers to use all these services with native libraries. HTML and javascript developers have been brought new recently. Sam explains all the cool stuff like the camera, the accelerometer and the appMobi browser! It works on iPhone, Android and anywhere else they want to take the platform.

“We are kind of like the ‘Amazon web services for mobile’,” Mr. Abadir says. “Others may try to lock you into their proprietary language world. Then, you have to use their service. With us, you do have the option to use our tools and never pay us a dime.”

He continues, “Many want to copy the success of Apple. It’s all about creating one’s own developer communities. Trying to scratch of the developer. We are weird guys. After this, I’ll go back to my developer hole.” (Chuckles.)

AppMobi enables carriers and entrepreneurs to rebrand our tools as their own. They work on a wholesale/retail model. They get the retail markup. This is somewhat like the model that mobile carriers and operators and IP communications entrepreneurs use international direct inward dialing, mobile wallets, and online gaming tools to attract customers and retain them.

He announced that Lee Westerfield joined the company lately as the CFO. He was the 2008 Wall Street Journal top stock picker in the picker area. He’s on board with appMobi, a good indication that appMobi is a good pick!

Chairman Sunil Mehta and the CEO and Chief Product Architect Sachin Ahuja of MooFwd‘s services were chosen for the Innovation Showcase at CTIA Wireless 2011. In the midst of their fast-paced schedule of interviews and meetings, their mobility public relations expert Melissa Burns recommended them to talk with Techistan and DIDX podcasters. What a treat! And these guys have a sense of humor and creativity even while serving practical purposes, too.

Suzanne Bowen: Please share an elevator (short description) timeline of Moofwd. (We love the pun for Move Forward in the foundry’s name.)

Sachin Ahuja: MooFwd is a mobile developer application platform that enables enterprise IT teams to mobilize business processes and move forward quickly.

We were founded in 2009. We have been developing this product from the ground up and have covered several milestones. We have a launch pending in April of a very large educational product. We have clients whom we are helping with their mobile portfolios.

Techistan notes: Earlier this year, Gartner, Inc. the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company approached executives at moofwdTM as a possible participant in their Mobile Consumer Application Platform (MCAP) Magic Quadrant Research initiative.

Suzanne Bowen: In an age where people and organizations are mobile and want to be able to work and play using their devices no matter they are seems to lead to a conclusion that cloud-based services are important. What issues do you hear more often in regards to mashing up technology on the premises with cloud-based services and how does Moofwd help resolve or prevent them?

Sachin Ahuja:Mashing up internal and external data sources is a core strength and our unique differentiator. There is a relevant need for mobile solutions typically … but concentrating primarily on the mobility end of the enterprise landscape. We target more towards the enterprise rather than the mobility side.

What happens is you have a bunch of very interesting application systems at your premises. You might have ERP, CRM, and all those good things within your premises.

At the same time, you are now moving towards cloud-based services which is very compelling. They provide a big bang for the buck.

It becomes very tricky to merge these together. (What equipment and software are physically on the premises and the potential of cloud-based services.) Quite often services on your premises are behind your firewall. Your IT team is going to be very scared to open up those ports so that external devices and external middleware can access those services.

What we have done to alleviate this particular concern, we have created what we call enterprise security relay server which sits in an enterprise’s DMZ. It talks behind the scenes, behind the firewall to the real systems of ERP, CRM, etc.

The ERS (enterprise security relay server) does not make any data status, whatsoever. The only data status is the caching of information that is being transmitted to enhance performance. Even that is encrypted.

So the concern of our customers have shared with us? “We are not going to dump our systems because you’ve created a shiny new technology. We really want to keep using them and we want to use them securely. We want it all to be able to go on to our mobile devices.”

We took care of all these scenarios by introducing this small but very effective middleware that takes care of this communication. It meshes well with the rest of Moofwd communications products.

Sunil Mehta: Also I would like to add to that … the enterprises do not have to spend as much money and energy improving their systems or creating them from scratch. What we are doing is enabling rapid development of the enterprise and business rules and logic within the systems and on mobile devices.

Suzanne Bowen: Why re-invent the wheel when we have companies like yours around?

I know this may sound like a silly question but I think it is valid. One of our Techistan magazine readers asked … is the Moofwd Code Farm a physical location or is it also where interaction is within the cloud? Or both? Who is eligble to petition to take part? What are the requirements?

Sachin Ahuja: It is a valid question. It is a physical location and it is also not a physical location.

Who can participate? Moofwd has a very strong IT bias. What we look for is highly intelligent people who know something about what they are doing. Otherwise, to be a part of our group … to do really great things in the field of mobility. We have an email address. Send me an email. Call my DID phone number. It is available on our website, so we can invite you in.

There is a physical location where we do our code jams which are at our offices in Princeton. It could also be some really nice watering holes around. Go there, open up a couple bottles of beer and laptops and get some code-cracking. That’s what the code farm is.

Suzanne Bowen: Great answers. Anything new about your executive team? We realize we have the Chairman and also the CEO and Chief Architect here with me today. Also any new offerings, or a sneak preview of what we have to look forward to from you at CTIA Wireless in Orlando Mar. 22-24 and in the near future?

Sachin Ahuja: Everything about the (beta?) team! We are just exposing ourselves to the public. That’s new within itself. No pun intended there.

We are launching an educational product very soon. It is comprehensive and built on our technology. It takes an educational institution that is very fragmented at the source. All the systems that interface with the students … we take all those things together in a very intuitive fashion to all the smartphone devices and tablets and to the students.

During CTIA Wireles 2011 we released a small application, a reference app from Moofwd … install it on your mobile device. You will get deals in the surrounding areas to get discounts. If you check into those places using the app, you’ll be eligible to win an iPad from Moofwd.

Suzanne Bowen: Wow!

Sunil Mehta: We’re also presenting at the Enterprise Mobile sessions at CTIA Wireless.

Suzanne Bowen: Sounds great. I’ll try to send someone over there. What is your website? How can people connect with you for business development, investment … do you use Linkedin … any contact information?

Sachin Ahuja: We’re on all the social networking, Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook. You can even called 855 2MOO FWD to directly to the executive team. Go to www.moofwd.com on any mobile device. We are eager to talk to people.

Suzanne Bowen: Great to talk with you two. It’s www.moofwd.com.

Sachin Ahuja and Sunil Mehta: Absolutely.

Jon Fischer, a Senior at Champlain College in Vermont, has launched SpeedBump – a mobile app that helps parents and their new teenage drivers stay focused on safe driving. The app allows parents to set realistic speed limits on different road types using a patented SpeedSmart technology. The software can distinguish between highways and side roads. If the teen exceeds those limits, an instant text alert is sent to the parents. Also if the driver is talking or texting while driving a message is sent to the parents. The premise of this application is that it opens up discussion between teens and parents while allowing the teen to keep their privacy. The app doesn’t track the teen’s location via GPS – unless they exceed the predefined speed limits.

The software focuses on collecting data and reporting on behavior rather than locking down phones. Other applications in the traffic space lock a teen’s phone if it’s in a moving car – which also prevents passengers from using their phone. Sprint announced at CTIA an upcoming release of an Android app that allows parents to “shut-down” texting capabilities on their teen’s phone while driving.

Jonathan first came up with the idea for a Science Fair project in high school when he was taking a driver’s education class in 2005. He designed and built a hardware product called Speed Demon. Jonathan and his father Dick Fischer are co-owners in the company that produces these products, WirelessESP.

Jonathan has been recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit with several awards and college scholarships to Champlain where he’s getting ready to graduate with a degree in business. He decided his passion was for creating and running the business and not so much for doing the heads-down software development. Jonathan contracts with local software engineers to develop and maintain the product while he focuses on Intellectual Property, business development and graduating this Spring!

As a mother of three former teenager drivers, this product is intriguing. Those early driving years were stressful for parents as we struggled to maintain a balance between giving them independence and hoping that they will make wise and safe choices. We lectured, encouraged and even signed safe driving contracts on rules and consequences. This product looks like a tool that facilitates parent-teen agreements – here are the rules, we’ll assume you are following them, if you don’t we’ll find out and then the consequences kick in. This gives parents a chance to intervene and modify behavior and hopefully head off a ticket, accident or injury

Speedbump is being released initially as an Android app. The pricing is reasonable and affordable – especially for parents of multiple teen drivers at $9.99/month subscription fee. For more information, visit http://www.speedbumpgps.com.

Speedbump was also at the Showstoppers during International CTIA Wireless 2011 in Orlando.

I look forward to hearing more about this young company and their success in our mobile world.

Maria Weisnicht is the owner of CED Technical Services, an IT consulting and staffing company based in Pensacola, FL. She particularly enjoyed meeting with this young entrepreneur who has yet to graduate from college but already has a great idea, a business plan and a product launched for the mobile app space.

Obion is a free mobile communications application that can be downloaded from the iTunes App store. This mobile communication tool was created by Obihai Technology of Cupertino, California which was founded by who some say were the inventors of the first analog telephone adapter that enabled calling over the Internet without a computer. (Others say that Nettalk’s Mark F. Rodriguez, Anastasios Takis Kyriakides, Kenneth Hosfeld, and Leo Manzewitsch were the first with the concept and idea.) Obihai’s founder and CEO is Jan Fandrianto while with Komodo Technology in the late 1990s.

In addition to the mobile application to make and receive calls from Apple products, Obion offers the OBiTALK web portal and some cool hardware called the Obi110 Voice Services Bridge. Users use the Bridge to make calls from local landlines and receive calls from local or remote landlines. The Obi110 Bridge is around $60; whereas, the Ooma is about $180, Lingo adapter is around $75 (waived when signing up for service), and the 8×8 adapter is $30 also waived with signup.

Lonnie Lazar, a CultofMac writer says, “Obihai Technology is a start-up making improvements to the OBiTALK web interface and to OBi110 firmware on an ongoing basis as a result of feedback from users such as this reviewer and others who are active in the company’s online forum. In nearly two months of playing with and testing various aspects of the service, Obihai engineers and customer service personnel proved themselves open to hearing about problems and difficulties with the technology and keen to make it as user-friendly as possible. Is it perfect? Not yet. But it’s definitely an intriguing and potentially disruptive development in voice communications. Those who choose to explore it as it continues to evolve are bound to have fun.”

Services and devices like the Obion mobile app and the Obi110 make it possible for people all over the world to talk to each other practically free. Calls between devices have no per minute charge. In cases where an Obion user (let’s call him Jari) hasVIP (very important people) such as Mom in Venezuela, girlfriend in Pakistan, and business partner in Japan, he can ask his Obion representative what is the SIP address. Then Jari can buy a virtual phone number of Venezuela, Pakistan and Japan from a company like JetNumbers, MyDivert or VirtualPhoneLine. He lets his Mom, girlfriend and business partner the local number they can call. They call him any time, and the call rings on his cell phone, his Obion device or in some cases, depending on the virtual phone number service provider … on his Skype, Gtalk, Yahoo instant messenger, fring service, Truphone, Nimbuzz, or another SIP service, etc. etc.

Based on a survey of Techistan friends, many of the ladies stated they like the terminology used by Obion such as “Circle of Trust” for the requests and invitations feature of the Obion mobile app … especially the auto-attendant, that can be configured to answer “trusted” endpoints (based on CallerID) and/or require a special PIN to be entered by the person calling the user. A majority of the men say they enjoy the PC software OBiAPP (available for Windows, with a Mac Beta due by beginning of 2011). The software enables calling from softphones like Counterpath’s popular X-Lite. Both genders mention quite often they like the ease of updating firmware.

The complete line of 20 different toys will be available for retail in early 2011. The toys will be hitting stores everywhere next spring, with local launches planned with exclusive product sets distributed by selected partners.

“It is exhilarating to see the positive response from our fans regarding Angry Birds plush toys,” says Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “To our knowledge, this is the first time a brand that started as a mobile application has expanded into the toy market on such scale.”

Angry Birds was originally launched in December 2009. In one year, Angry Birds has shot from initially modest App Store success to the gaming phenomenon of 2010. To date, different versions of Angry Birds have been downloaded over 36 million times.

Rovio has organised a global Angry Birds Day in collaboration with Meetup.com. Hundreds of people around the world have already scheduled meetups, where fans can take part in celebrating the first anniversary through Angry Birds themed activities. By far the largest event is shaping up in London, with sizeable fan gatherings being prepared in New York, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Moscow, and other major cities around the world.

The Finnish operator Elisa will host the Angry Birds Day event in Helsinki, where the developers of Angry Birds will give interviews and have conversations with Rovio partners, friends and fans alike.

Before Angry Birds Day, on Friday, December 10, Rovio and Elisa will arrange a press event, where media representatives will get a demonstration of a brand new Angry Birds Experience. In addition to this, Rovio and Elisa will have a market disruption level announcement for the mobile application industry.
