Nokia has done with this mobile gadget  Nokia calls it a “kinetic device,” a prototype with a flexible display the company showed at Nokia World 2011 in London.

Instead of the pinch to zoom capabilities copied throughout the smartphone industry.

Nokia has come up with a novel way to accomplish the same thing When you bend and twist this handset.

The image on its screen does your bidding in a highly intuitive way.

One of the advantages Nokia touts for such a device is the ability to use it without looking at it for instance, twisting it in your pocket to dismiss a call or change song on a music player.

How does it work? According to CNET, a Nokia demonstrator said the company was experimenting with bundles of carbon nanotubes whose  properties change when they’re stretched.

Those nanotubes are embedded in a flexible substance that allows the device to control the screen when twisted and bent.

An additional advantage.

The device is much tougher and is water resistant, too.

We’ve heard of displays that might be capable of folding like a newspaper and rolled up like a tube, but the idea of controlling by bending is different.

Imagine the possibilities, Perhaps it could be used by blind people, where the bending properties of the device would not require vision to intuitively control a smartphone.

When will we see such a thing in the real world? Nokia’s not saying precisely when its kinetic device will be released, but one rep tells IntoMobile in the video embedded below, “hopefully soon.”

The announcement comes from the president of Microsoft‘sWindows Phone division Andy Lees.

Nokia will show off the first Nokia Windows Phones to the world at the Nokia World event on Oct. 26-27 in London.

This is in line with the previous announcement that the first WP devices from Nokia will hit Europe this year, but an official date has been locked down.

The retailer is the biggest online books seller and the US’s second largest seller of music online after Apple’s iTunes, and it has been increasingly building up its online movies and TV sales and rentals business.

“The Kindle for Amazon was about selling books and magazines. Apple’s business is about selling devices. You are looking at very different approaches,” he said.

Amazon hopes its brand recognition and loyal book-buying customer base will enable it to do battle with Apple, which produced 75% of the tablets sold this year.

Sony has confirmed at the Tokyo Games Show that the Japanese launch date for the PlayStation Vita handheld is set for December 17 an that the device will start selling with 24,980 Yen when it is out.

Shares of Motorola Mobility, traded on the NYSE, shot up by 60% in pre-market trading, while Google’s shareholders didn’t seem to like the deal, sending its shares down by 3% in pre-market trading in New York.

Google has just closed its biggest acquisition to date, and in the process has declared war on Apple in the world of mobile devices.

The company announced this morning that it was buying smartphone and tablet maker Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in cash, paying a whopping 63% premium on Motorola’s closing share price.

The companies said both boards had approved the deal, which will give Google complete control of the manufacturer of smartphones and tablets like the Xoom, which run the Android operating system.

At the beginning of this this year Motorola spun off Motorola Mobility, its mobile device and home entertainment unit, changing its name to Motorola Solutions. The parent company said it would focus on providing communications services to government agencies and the private sector.

But Motorola Mobility failed to thrive on its own, as the writer Staska on UnwiredView.com points out. While Motorola did well to focus on producing devices that ran on Android.

There were delays to its LTE device releases, the product mix became uninspiring and HTC and Samsung became bigger threats.

Staska points that that in an interview with Fortune a month ago, Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha said he expected much consolidation in his industry. Then he said: “Do we expect Motorola to be an independent company? I don’t know yet.”

Staska then suggests that Google should buy Motorola Mobilty, adding Google would “get a world class mobile device hardware R&D team, that can help push Android limits with a Nexus line.”
