Lee Kun-hee returns as chief of Samsung Electronics

Mar 25th, 2010 | By omar shaikh | Category: Omar Shaikh

It sure pays to be a white collar criminal in Korea. Especially when you’re the son of the founder of Samsung. Lee Kun-hee, the disgraced former chairman of the Samsung Group, is returning to thechaebol as the head of Samsung Electronics — Samsung’s largest division and of primary interest to us gadget nerds. Remember, this is the man convicted of tax evasion only to be pardoned (twice!) by South Korean presidents with all jail time deferred. His latest pardon was issued so that he could help South Korea win a bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

This Is the Future of the Fight Against Cancer

Mar 24th, 2010 | By omar shaikh | Category: Omar Shaikh

Look close. You may be staring at the end of cancer. Those tiny black dots are nanobots delivering a lethal blow to a cancerous cell, effectively killing it. The first trial on humans have been a success, with no side-effects:
It sneaks in, evades the immune system, delivers the siRNA, and the disassembled components exit out.
Those [...]

If shyness dictates that you slink away to a corner rather than engage with people when you get in a public place, veteran photographer David Hurnsuggests that photography is a perfect tool for overcoming shyness.

Hurn, whose photography career has spanned decades and whose pistol became the trademark of James Bond in photos, wasn’t always terribly [...]

Treat Your Presentation like a Performance to Nail Timing and Delivery

Mar 24th, 2010 | By omar shaikh | Category: Omar Shaikh

It sounds like a most elementary sort of advice—just memorize it!—but it contrasts sharply with the “put a few bullet points down on a piece of paper” camp that most people belong to when it comes to getting ready for a presentation.

Although Gladwell may come across to his audience as though he is [...]

Perfect Your Presentation by Kidnapping Random Slides

Mar 24th, 2010 | By omar shaikh | Category: Omar Shaikh

I was at a microbiology seminar this afternoon where a researcher was giving a presentation via PowerPoint. After a few slides a crucial diagram failed to show up over the projector. I would have gotten flustered and cursed the Microsoft Office for Mac gods. This presenter didn’t though. She just walked over to a nearby [...]

Which Should I Use on Windows: Firefox or Chrome?
There’s no short answer to this question, really, since neither browser is clearly better, so instead of a straight out “Use X” recommendation, let’s consider the pros and cons of each.
First, in our regular web browser performance tests, Chrome has regularly beaten up the competition or come in a very [...]

Motorola BACKFLIP review: Back and forth

Mar 23rd, 2010 | By omar shaikh | Category: Omar Shaikh

Android elders must be staring at this one in disbelief. Looking down at it for all we know, measuring it up. What about the BACKFLIP? We guess it’s exactly the kind of gadget to stare back, humble but defiant.
//

Android was a life-saving blood transfusion for Motorola. Not only did the MILESTONE put them back [...]
