Designed to look like a palm tree, the La Mesa tower and one in Campo are touted as enhancing network coverage for area residents and businesses.

The activation of new cell sites is one part of AT&T’s ongoing effort to drive innovation and extend its mobile network, said a press release from AT&T.

The same Lake Murray tower is the target of aprotest movement led by local parent Heidi Bentz, who objected to its placement west of Murray Manor Elementary School.

Tammi Terrell, AT&T vice president and general manager in San Diego, said.

Our goal is for our customers to have an extraordinary experience and AT&T has invested nearly $375 million in its San Diego wireless and wireline networks from 2008 through 2010.

It is also part of its investment to build the networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable AT&T customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

As an active part of this community, we’re always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage, and our investment in the local wireless network is just one way we’re accomplishing that.

In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA will strengthen and expand our network in San Diego County.

AT&T said its mobile network is based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) standard, “the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world.

AT&T offers data roaming in 200 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 220 countries.

If approved, this deal means that we’ll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband 4G LTE from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to 97 percent.

The federal Communications Commission is an organization in the US which is tasked with testing and validating products that have wireless capabilities.

Even products that aren’t aimed at US customers sometimes get put through the test, since FCC approval is always a nice plus to stick on a box.

The latest product to get looked at by the FCC, and to be revealed, via a filing, ahead of its official launch, is the Lenovo BT820.

Apparently, Bluetooth connectivity is present, meaning that any desktop, laptop, perhaps even consumer electronics and mobile devices (smartphone, tablets, etc.) will work fine with it.

Its support for wireless connectivity can be deduced just by virtue of being filed for approval in the first place.

Design-wise, the newcomer isn’t overly sophisticated, though the round, lightbulb-reminiscent shape might raise a few eyebrows.

For those that want to know what the audio device operates on, AA batteries are employed, though it is unclear how long a charge will last.

As far as mobility goes, the product is not, perhaps, as compact as it could have been, with an 8-inch diameter. Nonetheless, it does have the looks of something affordable.

Lenovo will have to get around to the part where it actually sends this invention out into the world before any pricing details emerge.

Unfortunately, just when this is hasn’t been disclosed, though it shouldn’t be overly long.

Fortunately, the BT820 does have stereo drivers, so it is fairly safe to assume the audio quality will be superior to the speakers of an average laptop, even those of Ultrabooks.

The product expansion is a sign that the Plantronics is hoping to continue to ride the back of an enterprise UC wave that helped push the global headset market to 19.5 percent growth in 2010.

Plantronics introduced a new multi-device adapter (the MDA200) that connects to a deskphone and computer, as well as corded and wireless USB adapters.

Organizations today need flexibility and new ways to leverage existing technology,” said Bill Loewenthal, VP for unified communications at Plantronics. “The MDA200 provides flexibility and enables companies to leverage their existing Plantronics audio devices.

No matter which headset is being used corded, wireless DECT or Bluetooth, the MDA200 can connect enterprise workers to both their softphone and their desk phone.

Research from Frost & Sullivan last month showed UC adoption is expected to continue to push the headset market to CAGR of 10.7 percent between 2011 and 2017, with the most rapid growth anticipated in the APAC region.

Plantronics headsets continue to dominate the market with a share of about 60 percent; GN Netcom, meanwhile, has a market share of about 29 percent.

By showing how top-performing cities successfully use ICT to grow, Ericsson aims to inspire and contribute to a global Networked Society.

City mayors, local authorities and decision makers can use the framework ranking to meet the growing urbanization trend and enable organizational and societal success.

The Networked Society City Index – established through a joint study conducted by Ericsson and management consultancy Arthur D. Little and presented on May 10 at Ericsson’s Business Innovation Forum in Silicon Valley in the US – shows that cities with a high level of ICT maturity are better able to manage issues such as environmental management, infrastructure, public security, health-care quality and education.

Erik Almqvist, Director at Arthur D. Little Nordic, says: “Building a Networked Society is one of our time’s great challenges for mankind. Although this analysis should be seen as a humble starting point to explore the link between ICT investments and sustainable development, it is our joint hope and intention that this report can serve as inspiration for cities that do not settle for the status quo.”The three best-performing cities presented in the index – Singapore, Stockholm and Seoul – have successfully met many social, economic and environmental targets by making extensive investments in ICT. Singapore, for example, is aggressively driving innovation in e-health, and is a pioneer in traffic-congestion management. Stockholm sees ICT as a major enabler for research collaboration and knowledge transfer, while Seoul is using ICT to realize green high-tech initiatives.

The index also suggests actions for low-ranking cities, which are encouraged to provide digital access and ICT training for the underprivileged parts of their populations to reduce the digital divide.

Mathieu Lefevre, Executive Director of the New Cities Foundation, says: “The ‘networked city’ is here, and it will significantly impact the life of a growing

share of the world’s population. Ericsson – as demonstrated by this important new Networked Society City Index, – has grasped the significance of this mega-trend, and is positioned at the forefront of thinking on tomorrow’s urban connected planet.” Today, more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2030, that percentage is expected to grow to about 60. The number of megacities (defined as cities with 10 million inhabitants or more) is expected to rise to more than 30 by 2030,representing an increase of about 40 percent. As the number of megacities rises, key decision makers will be better able to ensure that this growth is sustainable if they can learn from the successes of top-performing cities in the Networked Society.

Erik Kruse, from the Networked Society lab at Ericsson, says: “By providing examples of how ICT can promote a city’s growth, the index can be used to inspire dialog with decision makers to use ICT to enable organizational and societal success from economic, environmental and social perspectives.”

The top-10-ranking cities in the Networked Society City Index are: Singapore,Stockholm, Seoul, London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Shanghai and

StarHub has implemented the integrated CEM system to improve the overall experience of its subscribers.

StarHub is based in Singapore and it is the second largest wireless operator focused on the Island State. Singapore is one of the most developed and affluent markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Mobile penetration has reached 150 per cent, data usage is increasing and more than 60 per cent of the StarHub Mobile post-paid subscriber base has adopted smartphones.

Chan Kin Hung, Head, Products & Solutions, StarHub, explained: “In the highly competitive Singapore mobile market we deployed Arantech’s CEM to proactively identify customer issues, which allows us to respond to such issues in a timely and appropriate manner.”

He added: “We selected Arantech on the basis that its CEM tools would enable us to deliver an excellent customer experience and that the data extracted would be accessible to multiple departments within the organisation, from the network engineers to the customer service teams.”

Brian Carroll, CEO of Arantech, commented: “StarHub is a leading advocate of CEM and how it can be used to eliminate common problems associated with customer experience, such as dropped calls or badly configured handsets. StarHub is also aware of the value that CEM represents in terms of developing a better understanding of its subscriber base.”

Arantech touchpoint™ enables CSPs to gain an enhanced level of service visibility and a deeper insight into their subscribers experience of network services, allowing them to protect themselves from churn and ARPU decline. Arantech’s touchpoint™ CEM solution does this by building and storing real time experience customer metrics for every subscriber in the network, which are visualized through a set of rich user interfaces and business intelligence tools. Data analysis is typically restricted to network engineers and IT teams, Arantech’s openplatform ProAction, provides an interface that non-technical staff can use to capture, analyse and act upon events that impact on customer experience. This enables the operator to deal with network, service or device issues rapidly before the subscriber experiences any impairment in service delivery.

Arantech is attending the CommunicAsia conference in Singapore (21st – 24th June), the company will be located at stand No BN4 01.

About Arantech

Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Arantech supplies a suite of Customer Experience Management (CEM) software solutions and CEM consultancy services to help telecom operators derive maximum benefit from their existing network infrastructure, customer and service management systems. Arantech’s client base includes four of the six largest mobile operator groups in the world, serving in excess of 300 million mobile subscribers.

Bankrupt one year and purchased the next … that’s CommPartners’ Hosted Services to Momentum Telecom and its carrier side to Point1. Russian mobile giant with subscribers in South Asia, Russia, Africa and Middle East buys a tiny mobile sleeper.

Ask anyone in the Open Source and telecommunications community around the globe who CommPartners is? A typical answer would be, “Oh, they are the ones key to keeping http://www.voip-info.org going.” Another … “aren’t they based in Las Vegas?” CommPartners has had some all time lows including filing bankruptcy in 2010. The 6th of May was a high, Momentum Telecom is buying CommPartners’ hosted services.

Momentum Telecom is a telecommunications company who sells white label voice services (rebranding their own voice services for others to start their business) and broadband management. Their customers are USA cable operators, city governments, and some managed services providers. Why buy CommPartners’ hosted services? They have 200 reseller customers? Annual revenues of 77 million USD? Low investment, high returns? Popularity? Momentum was not the only looking to buy CommPartners’ assets.

“Our management team identified an excellent opportunity to acquire the assets of another digital voice provider for financially favorable terms, giving us the ability to grow our customer base, leverage significant core technology assets to the advantage of current and future customers, and continue building leadership in this space,” said Momentum CEO Alan Creighton. “We have invested heavily in the supporting applications and processes to scale our hosted IP telephony business, putting Momentum in a perfect position to acquire smaller companies that need capital infusions to continue servicing customers.”

TMCnet blogger Peter Radizeski indicated that CommPartners problems stemmed from problems over access charges and its reluctance to appropriately adjust its pricing in light of such issues. Radizeski wrote at the time: “An inside source reminds me that, ‘It’s a Chapter 11 re-organization, not liquidation. Caused by an FCC that has been afraid to tackle inter-carrier compensation reform and by greedy ILECs that act as if they are entitled to inflated access charges. … they will emerge stronger post re-org.’”

(Corrections made after discussion with Peter Radizeski.)

Other recent acquisitions and announcements include. TelePacific Communications, the largest California-based CLEC providing integrated voice and data telecommunications services to the small and medium-sized business (“SMB”) customer segment in California and Nevada … will buy Telekenex, a business-grade IP services provider headquartered in San Francisco and Seattle.

VimpelCom Ltd., who has over 181 million mobile subscribers, signed the required documents to acquire 100% of the shares of Open Joint-Stock Company “New Telephone Company” (“NTC”) from KT Corporation and Summit Telecom Global Management B.V., subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, and a leading mobile operator in the Primorskiy region of Russia. Acquisition price $420 million USD.

Are there formulas here that others can follow in order to get acquired and crawl out from under all the pressure? Russia looks hot. Our Russian telco Konstantin told us that three years ago at ITEXPO West that Russia was about to have a lot of money to spend.

————————————————————–
